Okay, we’re going to start off by my admitting that I don’t usually care for contemporary romance books. I just prefer stuff with more fantastical elements. That being said… I freaking loved this novella!
It was a very short audiobook so it didn’t have a lot of room for character growth and build up but Ali Hazelwood did a magnificent job of cramming all the necessary bits in to make it work. The novella tells the story of two science nerds who have a really hot moment (no sex) at JPL one night while she’s working on her PhD but they go their separate ways after. Five years later, they end up in proximity of each other’s NASA careers and even though there’s some rough terrain to navigate, they of course get together at the end.
I’m a big nerd. I love space. I love Mars. I love nerdy men with beards. This story totally hit it off for me and I cannot tell you much I enjoyed the ending when Ian describes Hannah’s body as topography of Mars. Like a 10 on the hot nerdy scale.
The only issue I had, which didn’t bother me too much because it wasn’t overly emphasized, was that Hannah had some weird self-image issues and thought about herself as useful to men only for sex. It was sort of sad and since this book is supposed to be a STEMinist one, I didn’t expect it.
I gave this book 4 out of 5. I had a fun time with this story and would read it again!
