Debut release from James J. Butcher. Yes, Butcher as in that Butcher. I was so excited to read this! James’ father is one of my favorite writers and I couldn’t wait to see if the writing and world building talent runs in the family… and IT DOES! Dead Man’s Hand completely rocked my world.
After failing out of Auditor training at the Department of Unorthodox Affairs, Grimsby finds himself doing low-level entertainment magic a the local kid’s party pizza joint (think Chuck E. Cheese but with wizards). That is, until his former mentor is killed down the street and he’s become the number one suspect. Working with his mentor’s partner, the grizzled Mayflower (aka The Huntsman), Grimsby must figure out the mystery of who killed his secretive (and dangerous) mentor, and who is trying to frame him for murder.
This story is an urban fantasy that takes place in Boston. It’s packed with magic, interesting (and unusual) characters, an interesting take on familiars, and a cheeky, sarcastic, but lovable young man just looking for a second chance in life. James J. Butcher’s humor is present throughout the story and adds a layer of casual humor over what’s actually a pretty dark tale.
I listened to his on Audible and just fell in love with James Patrick Cronin as narrator. He has a fantastic range of voices and does an excellent job adding uniqueness to each character. I will look up other books he’s narrated so I can get more of his charming style.
I gave this book 5 out of 5. I will listen to this one again for sure. It was everything I hoped it would be, plus some. If you like Jim Butcher’s work and are a fan of Terry Pratchett, I’d say this is a good mix of both those styles.
