Magic and witches are kept secret to stay safe, living apart from each other so they don’t draw attention to themselves. However, one witch named Mika Moon pushes those rules when she takes a job teaching three witch children. She moves into a big house, falls into the middle of many secrets, and finds the family she always wished she had.
I really looked forward to reading this one, but it fell totally flat for me. I will say that the book is well written, but it was simply not my cup of tea. It was too slow, and too boring, and too domestic. I can see why a lot of readers rate it so highly though, Sangu Mandanna has a great concept and excellent writing skills.
I listened to this on audiobook, narrated by Samara MacLaren. I don’t know what the publishers were thinking, but they took a 5 hour book, slowed it to an unbearable speed, just to make it 7 hours long. Seriously, it was so slow I had to listen to it at 1.7x speed just for it to sound normal and interesting.
I gave this book 3 out of 5 simply because I felt that the author did a good job, and a middle-rating was fair because the issues I had were more about me and my personal preferences, and not about the author’s talents. I cannot say I’d read this again but I do recommend it to readers who like slow tales about found family and magic.

One response to “Book Review – The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches”
[…] What did you recently finish reading? This week, I finished Dead Man’s Hand by James J. Butcher. I loved this one! The characters were great, the magical elements were fun (especially the familiars). Check out my review of Dead Man’s Hand here.I also finished The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sengu Mandanna. This book didn’t agree with me, but it wasn’t a bad book. It was very well written, just not my type of writing. Check out my review of The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches here. […]
