Charming, whimsical, and delightful.
The town of Protectorate offer a baby up every year to the witch of the woods, in the hopes that she will spare the town from harm. Each year, Xan picks up these little babies and takes them to a good, loving home. One year, she finds Luna and accidentally feeds her too much moonlight, leading Luna to have magical powers too great for a child to handle, so Xan locks those powers away until Luna’s 13th birthday. When Luna’s 13th birthday arrives, her world is turned upside down, and only she can save everyone from danger and misunderstandings.
This is a magical story that a reader of any age can enjoy. There’s a delightful cast which includes a wise swamp monster, a tiny dragon, a witch known as grandma, and a little girl whose imagination runs wild (with sometimes hilarious results). It has a good story that talks about family, love, trust, and coming of age. I especially enjoyed Luna’s youthful, mischievous behavior!
I gave this book 4 out of 5. It had some slow parts, but otherwise it was a great read and I’d listen to this one again!
