A very short zombie tale told in a journalistic style by a biologist. His illustrated journal is found long after the outbreak, but he never is.
This story begins in Seattle, which is the area that I’m from, so it was an attention catcher with all the references to the local area. The narrator takes leave of the urban sprawl and heads north into Canada to try and find a safe haven that’s been broadcasting on the radio for survivors to come and stay. During his journey, he describes his interactions with and observations of the reawakened undead in the way someone with a scientific background may do (lots of descriptions, details, and thoughts). He’s not totally alone and does meet up with some other survivors along his journey, but the devastation is described as 90% of the population infected so that’s a lot of zombies.. at least 2 Million zombies just in the Seattle metro area.
If you enjoy light zombie and apocalyptic reads, then this one is probably for you. It’s short, quick, and interesting. I listened to the audiobook version (it’s free to listen on Audible Plus Catalog), and have not seen the illustrations from the book but I hear that they are really interesting so you may want to check it out. I do recommend the audiobook version, it was narrated very well, however I did have to bump the speed up to 1.7x because it was agonizingly slow and I prefer a more urgent, fast paced zombie read.
I gave this book 4 out of 5. It was quick, entertaining, and a fun take on zombie outbreak origins.
