Let’s Talk Bookish –  Do You Read Reviews and Spoilers Before or After?

Do you like looking at reviews for books before you read them?

I will give the reviews a glance, but mostly to see what the general rating is before I buy it, and if it’s really low, I’ll peek at the top few to see why (is it bad writing or is there something deeper going on like a distaste of the author’s personal comments unrelated to the book itself?)

Is reading reviews important to you when choosing what books to read next?

Not really. I only usually check out reviews if it’s an author I have not read yet. But then, I don’t really read them, I just peek at whether it was well received or not.

Or do you prefer to wait until after you’ve read a book to look at reviews?

To actually read the reviews? Yes, I will wait until I’ve read it, or until I’ve DNF’d it. And even then, I won’t read them until after I’ve written my own review first so what other people think does not sway my own thoughts on it.

Do you ever look at spoilers before you read a book?

I’m extra sensitive when it comes to animal-companion deaths in books, so if there’s a pet companion, I will absolutely look to find out if it dies. I won’t read the book if it does.

I will also sometimes look for trigger warnings when I read horror books, because I am not a big fan of medical horror (unless its zombie-related) or graphic violence against children.
