First Line Friday – February 10th, 2023

First Line Friday is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

The Rules:

Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first.
Finally… reveal the book!

-The First Lines-

In the middle of the ocean, there was a girl who lived upon a rock.
This was not an ocean like the one you have imagined.
Nor was the rock like the one you have imagined.
The girl, however, might be as you imagined – assuming you imagined her as thoughtful, soft-spoken, and overly fond of collecting cups.

Any guesses?

First book of Brandon Sanderson’s Secret Project.

This title is a high fantasy tale about an island-dwelling girl who sets sail into an unusual sea of dangers. It’s supposed to be inspired by The Princess Bride and is shelved as Fantasy, but readers suggest it’s more of a YA tale with adventure and romance.

I will be reading this one when the physical book launches later this year. As for today (2/10/23), it is out on Kindle.
