Top Ten Tuesday – Things That Make Me Instantly Want to Read a Book

Things That Make Me Instantly Want to Read a Book

1 – Anything put out by specific authors!

I have a list of authors that I will auto-buy. This list includes some of these folks:
Brandon Sanderson
Charlaine Harris
Ali Hazelwood
Anne Hillerman
T. Kingfisher
Max Brooks
Jim Butcher
Honorable Mention: Terry Goodkind (RIP)

2 – Science Fiction & Horror featuring a strong, confident FMC

There are not enough strong, confident, and self-assured FMC in science fiction and horror books today. I’m not sure why that seems to be the case, but the tides are definitely changing for the better.

Some of my favorite auto-buys in SciFi & Horror with a great FMC:
The House at the End of the World by Dean Koontz
Devolution by Max Brooks
A House with Good Bones by T. Kingfisher
Ahsoka by EK Johnston
Dread Nation by Justina Ireland

3 – Tragic Romance trope

Nothing touches my emotions like a good, sad romance story. No one even has to die at the end, but the love characters don’t really get a ‘happy ending’ like typical romance novels. These seem difficult to find for some reason so if anyone has suggestions, send them my way.

4 – Enemies to Lovers trope

I’m putting this one down with an asterisk because I really only like these if there’s a villain/hero trope going on as well and the romance must be secondary to the storyline aka not a romance book.

5 – Creature Feature Horror

Another with an asterisk because I will only auto-buy these books if there’s a high focus on the monster in the story and the human emotional stuff is minimal. I just want stories about humans fighting monsters, not humans fighting with their own guilt about stuff that happened in the past!

I only have time to do 5 this week since I’m busy studying. I’m sure there’s a bunch more but these are the ones that came to mind first!

Sanderson and Kingfisher are on my auto-buy list, too! 🙂 I’m just starting to really like enemies-to-lovers, but it’s got to be done in a certain way or I’m not interested LOL

I totally feel that. I run into way too many that lean towards enemies must mean cruel, rude, arrogant, and abusive. *eye roll*
