This was such a fun, quick, supernatural assortment of delights. Bella Falls writes a specific type of book and while I love the idea of Cozy Mysteries, I haven’t found a ton that I’ve fallen in love with. However, Moonshine & Magic ended up being a wonderful and surprising treat for me.
Moonshine & Magic by Bella Falls takes place in Honeysuckle Hollow, where southern charm, sweet tea, and supernatural creatures reside. Our protagonist Charli is returning home after a not-so-graceful-exit a few years prior. She immediately finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery that involves her uncle Tipper. While investigating the murder alongside the interesting Detective Mason, she interacts with many characters from town, including vampires, werewolves, other witches, and shapeshifters, but also faces the effects of a curse!
This story is lighthearted, appropriate for all ages, and just down right wholesome. There are no real twists and the story is not overly complicated. There’s nothing directly violent or any major triggers to look out for.
I listened to this on audiobook and at first, I had a difficult time separating the narrator’s voice from another southern character I love: Sookie Stackhouse. Yep, that’s right, Johanna Parker narrates the Southern Charms Cozy Mysteries series. But once I got it into my head that Charlie =/= Sookie, the story really started to take off. And, did you know that Bella Falls is self-published? She now has 10 books under her belt! I suggest checking her out if you enjoy paranormal/supernatural cozy mysteries.
I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars and found that I really did enjoy the calm feel of this little story about a witch with a cool power who solves a mystery by helping the local detective. Very entertaining, can’t wait to dig into book 2.
